Do I need a special light switch for LED lights?

No, not for a plain on/off switch. Lutron says its switches work with both CFL and LED bulbs.1 A dimmer is different. Buy an LED-rated one like the Lutron Diva LED+ DVCL-153P, and use bulbs marked dimmable.2

Which switches work with LED bulbs

A plain switch needs nothing special. A dimmer needs an LED rating. Ratings marked (listing) come from the Amazon listing, not a maker sheet.

Do I need a special dimmer for LED lights?

Yes. The dimmer must be rated for LED. Lutron says its plain Diva DV-103P is not rated to work with LED lighting, and it offers the Diva LED+ DVCL-153P instead.6

The bulb matters too. Lutron says that when dimming LEDs or CFLs, only bulbs marked or rated as dimmable may be used.2

Why does my LED light glow when the switch is off?

Lutron says LED lights are extremely sensitive and react to nearly any voltage sent to them.7 So a tiny leak of power can make a bulb glow or flicker even when the light is off.

Lutron says this can still happen, rarely, with some load types.8

Do smart switches work with LED bulbs?

Yes, but a smart switch with no neutral wire can make LEDs flicker or glow.8 Lutron recommends neutral-based dimmers for LED loads.7

For its no-neutral on/off switch (the PD-5WS-DV), Lutron says a LUT-MLC part, which comes in the box, may be required, especially at lower wattages.8

What is the small part some no-neutral switches need?

Lutron calls its part a LUT-MLC, and includes it with the switch.8 Inovelli says its no-neutral switch needs a bypass installed at the light fixture.9

Lutron says it may be required, especially at lower wattages.8

Questions people ask

Can I use a regular switch with LED bulbs?

Yes. Lutron says its switches work with both CFL and LED light bulbs.1

Will my old dimmer work with LED bulbs?

Maybe not. Lutron says its plain Diva DV-103P is not rated to work with LED lighting.6

Do I need dimmable LED bulbs?

Yes, if the bulb is on a dimmer. Lutron says only bulbs marked or rated as dimmable may be used.2

Is there such a thing as an LED switch?

The plain ten-pack switch in the table says it is full-rated with LED, tungsten, fluorescent or resistive loads. That is a normal on/off switch.3

Turn off power at the breaker before you touch any switch. If you are not sure, hire a licensed electrician.
