Every shop light we checked for a 10 ft ceiling

The table puts lumens next to the height each maker says to mount the light. Most Amazon titles leave the height out, so we took it from the maker’s page.

A screw-in light with a title that counts twice

Nexillumi 2-pack screw-in garage light, 10+1 panels

The title lists 36,000 lumens, which counts both lights in the 2-pack. The listing itself says one light reaches 18,000. There is no maker page to check either number against.5

How many lumens does a 10-foot ceiling need?

A former utility lighting engineer, writing in Fine Woodworking, suggests about 50 foot-candles for a workshop.7 That is 50 lumens on each square foot of floor, so a typical 20 by 20 foot two-car garage needs about 20,000 lumens.8 Two hykolity lights rate 26,000 lumens together.1

That is our arithmetic from rated lumens. Real output on the floor is lower, so round up.

Is hykolity’s coverage rule the same as the floor math?

No. Hykolity’s rule of one 13,000-lumen light per 10 by 10 feet works out to 130 lumens per square foot. That is about 2.6 times the 50 foot-candle target.1 For a 400 square foot garage, the floor math gives 2 lights and hykolity’s rule gives 4.

Start with 2 if you want the target level. Choose 4 if you want a brighter room, as hykolity’s own rule does.

4 ft strips, 8 ft strips or a flush wraparound?

The hykolity strip hangs on a chain or mounts flat, plugs in with a 59 inch cord and links up to 3.1 Barrina’s 8 ft BAX72 gives 10,000 lumens per strip and links up to 4 on its page.2

Sunco’s Prisma wraparound is the flat option. It mounts directly to the ceiling, links up to 8 and is rated down to -4 F.3 Sunco lists the power type as corded, so check whether yours plugs in or needs to be hardwired.3

Is a UFO high bay too much for a 10-foot ceiling?

Sunco says its 150W size is ideal for ceilings between 12 and 16 feet.9 So the UFO is outside Sunco’s range at 10 feet. A strip is the other option.4

Questions people ask

What mounting height does hykolity give?

Hykolity says one light covers a 10 by 10 foot area when installed at 8 to 10 feet.1

Can I use the hykolity light in a cold garage?

Only down to 14 F. Hykolity’s rated range is 14 F to 104 F, so a colder garage is outside what the maker rates.1

How many hykolity lights can I link?

Up to 3, according to the maker’s page.1

Do the screw-in garage lights with 36,000 lumens give that much light?

The listing says each light reaches 18,000 lumens, so the 36,000 in the title counts both lights in the pack. Neither number comes from a maker page.5

Turn off the breaker before you hardwire any light, set up a stable ladder, and hire a licensed electrician if you are not sure.
