Plug-in caps to think twice about
Safety 1st Outlet plug covers, 36 count
CPSC says to be sure outlet protectors are large enough that children cannot choke on them. This listing does not publish the cap size.6
Plug caps, sliding plates or box covers: which is safest?
CPSC says to be sure outlet protectors cannot be easily removed by children and are large enough that children cannot choke on them.2 Caps sit in the slots. Sliding plates close by themselves when you pull the plug. Box covers shut over a plug that stays in the outlet.
We cannot rank how hard each type is to defeat, because none of the makers we read gives a pull-out force or a child test. The Safety 1st guide says it is only a deterrent, not a substitute for adult supervision.1 We pick the box cover for outlets in use and a sliding plate for outlets you use every day.
Do outlet covers fit Decora outlets?
Not all of them. Safety 1st says the 48308 is for standard duplex outlets that have a center screw.1 The Safety Innovations six-pack says center-screw outlets only in its title.5
The Safety Innovations Twin Door listing says it comes with plates for both outlet styles.4 A retailer says the Qdos plate fits both styles, with one or two screws.3 We did not read a Qdos maker page. Safety 1st also says the 48308 is not for appliances of 600 watts or more.1
Are plug caps a choking hazard?
CPSC says to be sure protectors are large enough that children cannot choke on them.2 The American Academy of Pediatrics' HealthyChildren site says to put non-choking safety plugs in all unused outlets.9
Neither cap pack gives a cap size. Safety 1st's 36-count listing says the caps are easily removable and reusable,6 and Wappa Baby's listing says its caps are difficult for children to remove. Neither shows a test.7 Loose caps are also easy to lose.
Should I swap to tamper-resistant outlets?
CPSC says that if you are replacing receptacles, use a tamper-resistant type.2 A covered outlet is one choice and a new tamper-resistant outlet is another. Replacing an outlet is work for a licensed electrician.
When should I stop using covers?
Safety 1st's guide says to stop using the 48308 when the child is old enough to defeat it.1 CPSC says determined toddlers have been known to overcome or disable these devices.2 Plan to check covers often, and keep watching a toddler who goes after one.
Questions people ask
Do outlet covers really keep kids safe?
They slow a child down. CPSC says no device is completely childproof, and determined toddlers have been known to overcome or disable them.2
Do any makers say how hard their covers are to pull out?
None that we read. We found no pull-out force or child test from any maker. The claims on the boxes, like "difficult for children to remove," cannot be compared.7
Which cover fits a Decora outlet?
The Safety 1st 48308 is for center-screw outlets only.1 The Twin Door listing says it ships with plates for both styles,4 and a retailer says the Qdos plate fits both.3
What should I use on an outlet I never use?
The American Academy of Pediatrics' site says to use non-choking safety plugs in unused outlets.9 Check the size, because CPSC says to be sure protectors are large enough that children cannot choke on them.2
Turn off the breaker before you replace an outlet, and hire a licensed electrician if you are not sure. No outlet cover is completely childproof, so keep watching small children.
