Best GFCI outlet for a garage freezer

Buy the Leviton GFWT1-W: a 15 A GFCI with a weather-resistant rating, which suits a cold or damp garage.1 Of the makers we read, only Leviton and Legrand claim fewer nuisance trips on their own pages, and neither shows test data.2 A full freezer holds its temperature about 48 hours, so add a power-loss alarm.3

Four listings that do not fit a garage freezer

ELEGRP GFCI Outlet G1920T, 20 A

A top-selling result in our search shows no weather-resistant rating on its listing, so it is the wrong pick for a cold or damp garage.7

Leviton SmartlockPro Slim GFCI GFTR1-W, 15 A

This looks like the GFWT1 but Leviton's page does not list weather resistance for it. The weather-resistant one has WT in the model name: GFWT1.8

BLUESKY 20 A GFCI, self-test, tamper and weather resistant

The listing promises fewer false trips. It shows no test or standard, and we found no maker page to back the claim.9

Fosmon Refrigerator surge protector, 3 outlets

This surge protector shows up in refrigerator and freezer searches. It guards against power spikes, not ground faults, so it does not stop a GFCI from tripping.10

Why does a GFCI keep tripping on a freezer?

Leviton says modern appliances can run at higher frequencies, and a GFCI may read that as a dangerous fault. Leviton's example is the high-efficiency refrigerator with an inverter motor.13 Leviton does not name freezers, but a newer freezer may use the same kind of motor.

Leviton also says all of its residential GFCI receptacles are HF-rated, and that UL created an optional high-frequency rating.14 That is Leviton's own claim, not independent testing, and its pages do not say model by model that the UL rating is on each one. Legrand says its 20 A radiant Sensitive Appliance GFCI, model 2097TRAPLW, "limits tripping caused from variable-speed drives."2 We found no Amazon listing for it.

Siemens, in a guide to its breakers, says the main sources of nuisance tripping are wiring issues and incompatibility with electronic devices.15 If a GFCI keeps tripping, ask a licensed electrician to check the circuit. Eaton's GFCI page would not load for us, so we have nothing from Eaton.

Does a garage need a weather-resistant GFCI?

Leviton lists the GFWT1-W as a weather-resistant outlet.1 Its GFTR1 page does not list weather resistance.8 An unheated garage is cold and can be damp, so we picked the model with the rating.

Whether your garage needs that type is a question for a licensed electrician or your local inspector, because codes vary. A top-selling result in our search, the ELEGRP G1920T, shows no weather-resistant rating on its listing.7

15 amp or 20 amp for a freezer outlet?

Match the new outlet to the one you have and the breaker behind it. Leviton makes the weather-resistant GFCI in 15 A and 20 A.1, 4 If you are not sure which you have, an electrician can tell you.

UL required GFCIs made from June 29, 2015 to test themselves, so self-test is not a reason to pick one brand.16

How long does freezer food last if the outlet trips?

FDA says a full freezer keeps its temperature for about 48 hours, or 24 hours if it is half full. An unopened refrigerator keeps food cold for about 4 hours.3 FDA also says to keep appliance thermometers in the freezer and the fridge.3

The clock starts when the outlet trips, not when you notice. A garage outlet is one you may not look at for days, which is why an alarm matters more than a status light.

Which power-loss alarm works in a garage?

These claims come from Amazon listings, and we have not run the alarms ourselves. Seektain's listing describes a plug-in alarm that sounds a siren and sends a phone alert.6 A phone alert needs Wi-Fi, so check your signal in the garage before you buy.

Satisure's listing describes a 120 dB siren with a flashing light and no phone alert.11 A siren helps only if someone is close enough to hear it, so it fits a garage next to living space.

Questions people ask

Does a garage freezer need a GFCI outlet?

Codes vary by place and by when the home was wired. Ask a licensed electrician or your local building inspector.

Can I use the indoor Leviton GFCI in a garage?

Leviton's GFTR1 page does not list weather resistance, and the GFWT1 page does.1, 8 Whether your garage needs the weather-resistant type is a local rule, so ask an electrician or your inspector.

How long will a full freezer stay frozen if the outlet trips?

FDA says about 48 hours for a full freezer and about 24 hours for a half-full one.3

Does a power-loss alarm need Wi-Fi?

Seektain's phone alerts do, because it is a Wi-Fi alarm.6 Satisure's siren has no phone alert, so it needs no Wi-Fi but needs someone nearby.11

Is the BLUESKY 20 A GFCI a good choice?

BLUESKY's listing says it is weather resistant and promises fewer false trips, but it shows no test and we found no maker page.9 Leviton's weather-resistant model is the one with a maker page that backs its claims.4

Turn off the breaker before you touch an outlet. Codes vary on where a GFCI is needed, so ask a licensed electrician or your local inspector, and hire one if you are not sure.
