Which solar lights last the longest?
Buy the Philips 1200-lumen solar light for a run-time claim you can check: 8 to 10 hours at 10% brightness on a stated 1800 mAh battery.1 That may not cover a long winter night. Of the lights that state lumens, only Philips and APILAB give both a battery size and hours.1, 2
Our picks

Run-time claim with its numbers
Philips solar security light, 302 LEDs, 1200 lumens
The maker says 8 to 10 hours at 10% brightness and states the 1800 mAh battery, so the claim comes with its numbers. That may not cover a long winter night.1

Longest hours with a stated battery
APILAB solar shed light, 2000 lumens, pull string
It publishes hours for each mode on a stated battery, 6000 mAh, up to 12 to 14 hours.2
Watch for: Only the panel is rated IP65. The listing says the battery box is not waterproof and must stay dry.

Best for a shaded wall (panel on a cable)
SUPERDANNY 2-pack solar flood lights, 16 ft cable
It claims 10 to 15 hours and has a dusk-to-dawn 10% mode, and the panel sits on a 16.4 ft cable so it can be in the sun while the light is in shade.3
Watch for: The listing gives no battery size, so the 10 to 15 hours cannot be checked.

Longest hours on Low (fence or deck)
JIORRIO 2-pack clip-on solar fence lights
It claims 30 hours on Low, the longest number on the list, and clips onto boards up to 2 in thick.4

Run times are the makers' claims. Most are for a low or medium setting, and some do not say which. We list battery size next to hours so you can see which claims come with the numbers behind them.

Run-time claims that come with a catch
daphino 2-pack solar flood lights, 3 heads, 2500 lumens
The listing says 'dim mode' without saying how dim. It also offers 30% and 10% settings, and it states no mAh for the lithium-ion cell, so the 12 hours cannot be checked.5
Skoiuc 100 ft solar + USB-C string lights
This is a string light, not a path or flood light.7
How many hours does a solar light really run?
The hours depend on the setting, so read the two together. Philips says 8 to 10 hours at 10% brightness.1 JIORRIO says 30 hours on Low, 20 on Medium and 10 on High.4 APILAB says 3 to 4 hours on high, 6 to 8 on medium and 12 to 14 on its automatic medium mode.2
Some listings say only 'up to 12 hours' or 'up to 20 hours' and do not say which setting that is. Four lights claim 10 to 30 hours with no mAh: SUPERDANNY, daphino, Skoiuc and JIORRIO.3–5, 7
Does a bigger battery mean a longer run time?
Not on its own. The DenicMic spotlights state 1500 mAh and claim 10 to 12 hours dusk to dawn.8 The DenicMic path light states 250 mAh and claims the same 10 to 12 hours in summer, but it is a small light and gives no lumens.6 Battery size also depends on voltage, so mAh is only a rough guide.
The battery tells you how much the light can store. How bright you run it tells you how fast it empties.
Can you replace the battery in a solar light?
Only one maker here says so. The DenicMic path light uses a standard AAA battery and calls it user-replaceable.6 None of the flood or shed lights states a replaceable battery.
What happens after a cloudy week?
No maker here gives a run time for cloudy weather. Every charge time is for sun, such as 4 to 5 hours for SUPERDANNY and 6 to 8 hours for APILAB.2, 3 Skoiuc is the only listing with a USB-C backup charge, and it is a string light, not a flood or path light.7
Questions people ask
Which solar light runs the longest?
JIORRIO claims the longest, 30 hours on Low, but it states no battery size.4 The longest claim that comes with a stated battery is APILAB at 12 to 14 hours on 6000 mAh.2
Will a solar light stay on all night?
It can if you use a low setting. Philips claims 8 to 10 hours at 10% brightness, which may fall short of a long winter night. At a higher setting the same kind of light runs fewer hours.1 APILAB claims 12 to 14 hours and JIORRIO 30 hours on Low.2, 4
Are these run times tested?
No. They are what the makers say on their listings. We read each listing and put the claims side by side. We did not run the lights.
Which of these lights has a battery you can swap?
The DenicMic path light, which uses a standard AAA battery.6
