Path lights with a catch

How bright are solar path lights?

The makers do not say. None of the six listings gives a lumen figure.^1–6 The DenicMic is the one that describes its light: a starburst pattern about 3 ft out from the light (6 ft across) on the ground, which the maker says is for decoration.³

Since lumens are missing, use the other numbers to choose. Battery size and water rating are the ones the makers do print. Batteries run from 100 mAh to 1000 mAh, but they are different types, so mAh is only a rough guide.

How far apart should path lights be, and how many do you need?

No maker gives a spacing. Packs hold 8 lights for KOOPER and BITPOTT, 10 for DenicMic and 12 for GIGALUMI.^{1–3, 5} Because spacing is not stated, set the lights out first, check them after dark, and move any that leave a dark gap.

What water rating should a path light have?

Look for IP65. KOOPER, BITPOTT, DenicMic and the warm white GIGALUMI state it.^{1–3, 6} The cool white GIGALUMI states IP44, the lowest here, even though its listing says waterproof.⁵ DERAYSION gives no rating.⁴

Tall or short lights?

Height is the biggest difference you can see, and KOOPER is the only maker that states one. KOOPER is 25.6 in tall, and its maker says that nearly doubles the height of ordinary solar path lights.¹
