Why does a 12-foot ceiling suit a round high bay?
Sunco is the one maker in our set that ties fixture size to ceiling height. Its blog puts the 150W size at 12 to 16 feet, a hardwired model of about 21,000 lumens at 15 to 20 feet, the 200W size (about 28,000 lumens) at 18 to 25 feet, and the 240W size (about 34,000 lumens) over 20 feet.1
At 12 feet you are at the bottom of the 150W range. The light has a 110 degree beam, so it spreads wide.2 The 4 ft strips we checked give no height above 10 feet, or none at all.3, 5
How many lumens do I need for a 12-foot ceiling?
A former utility lighting engineer, writing in Fine Woodworking, suggests about 50 foot-candles for a workshop.8 A typical 20 by 20 foot two-car garage is 400 square feet, so that is about 20,000 lumens.9 Two UFOs are rated for 39,000 lumens together, so you have room to spare.2
That is our arithmetic from rated lumens. Real output on the floor is lower, so round up. A one-car garage (240 square feet) needs about 12,000 lumens, so one UFO is enough on paper.
UFO high bay or 4 ft strip at 12 feet?
Pick the UFO if you want a number from the maker. Sunco’s range covers 12 feet.1 Hykolity’s coverage rule stops at 10 feet, and Barrina gives no height for the BAX72.3, 5
A strip can still work at 12 feet. You just have no maker figure to size it by. If you want a flat light, Sunco’s Prisma wraparound mounts straight to the ceiling and links up to 8, but Sunco gives no mounting height for it.4
Can I plug it in, or does it need wiring?
The plug-in UFO has a 60 inch cord and is not dimmable.2 Sixty inches is five feet, so the light has to hang within about five feet of an outlet. Check that an outlet is within 5 feet of where it will hang.
Sunco also sells a hardwired model for 15 to 20 feet.1 Leave any wiring change to a licensed electrician.
