How many LED recessed cans can one dimmer run?

Lutron rates the Diva LED+ for 150 watts of dimmable LED.1 Divide 150 by the watts of one bulb and round down. That is our math from the maker's rating.

At 6 watts per can, that is 25 cans. At 8 watts, 18 cans. At 9 watts, 16. At 10 watts, 15. At 12 watts, 12. At 15 watts, 10.

Which watts do I count for a can light?

We count the watts printed on the bulb or the trim kit, not the 'equal to 65 W' number. The 'equal to' number tells you how bright the bulb is. The real watts tell you what the dimmer has to carry. Lutron's rating is in watts of dimmable LED.1

Why do my recessed LEDs flicker on a dimmer?

The bulbs must be marked dimmable. Lutron says that when dimming LEDs or CFLs, only dimmable bulbs may be used.6

If they flicker low, raise the low end. The Diva LED+ has a low-end adjustment,1 and Leviton says to try raising the minimum dim level first.3

In a small room, count the cans too. Lutron says some dimmable LEDs need a minimum number of bulbs to work properly.1

What if I have more than 12 cans?

First check the real watts. If your cans are 8 watts, one 150 W dimmer runs 18.1 If you are still over, use a higher-rated dimmer, or ask an electrician about splitting the circuit.

The other option is a dimmer with a higher rating. The Leviton D36HD is rated for 300 watts of LED, but its Amazon listing says it needs a neutral wire.4
