Cold ratings that do not hold up
hykolity 4 ft 120W LED shop light, 13,000 lm
Hykolity rates this light from 14 F to 104 F. A garage that gets colder than 14 F is outside what the maker rates.2
Yihuven 200W UFO LED high bay, 30,000 lm
The listing says it can be used “from -100 to 150” with no unit. No LED fixture maker we read rates below -40 F, and Sunco’s -40 F is a number with a unit.7
What is the lowest temperature a garage LED light can handle?
It depends on the maker. Sunco rates its UFO high bay and a sealed 4 ft strip from -40 F to 113 F.1, 9 Sunco’s Prisma wraparound is rated from -4 F to 104 F, and Elite Lighting’s hex light from -4 F to 104 F.4, 5
LiftMaster says its garage door opener bulb is weather tested to -30 F.3 Hykolity’s range starts at 14 F.2 Barrina, Feit, Genie and DAKASON print no minimum on the pages we read.
Do LED shop lights work in an unheated garage?
Yes, if the garage stays inside the temperature range the maker prints. Radium, a lamp maker, says LEDs can run down to -20 C, which is -4 F.10 That matches the Prisma’s rating. The Sunco UFO is rated colder.1, 5
Match your coldest night to the number on the maker’s page. If the maker prints no number, you are guessing.
LED or fluorescent in the cold?
LED is the better choice. Radium says fluorescent lamps in barely heated garages often take longer to start and may not reach their usual brightness.10 It says T8 tubes work best at 25 C (77 F) and T5 tubes at 35 C (95 F), while LEDs like cool air.10
Sealed (vapor-tight) or open strip?
Sunco’s 4 ft vapor-tight light is IP65 and rated to -40 F, and it is hardwired.9 The DAKASON sealed strip is IP65 and ETL listed in its title, with 7,200 lumens, but it prints no minimum temperature.6
The Sunco UFO is also IP65 and plugs in, so a sealed body does not require hardwiring.1
Which listings claim a cold rating but give no number?
Yihuven’s UFO listing says “from -100 to 150” and gives no unit.7 No LED fixture maker we read rates below -40 F, so a bare -100 is not a rating.1
