Are USB outlets worth it?

Yes, if the USB-C port has USB Power Delivery. Buy the Leviton CC1P3-W: up to 30 W on one USB-C port.1 Of the outlets we read, only Leviton and Legrand rate USB-C that way. The cheaper in-wall outlets we read are 5 V only or do not say.2–5

Every USB outlet we checked

Rows marked Yes mean the maker says the USB-C port has USB Power Delivery. We read the maker's page where there is one, because the watts on the box are often a total shared across ports.

Two listings that are not what they seem

TOPGREENER 3-port USB outlet, 2-pack TU21536AC3

This looks like a USB-C outlet, but the listing says it does not support quick charging, so by the maker's own words it will not fast-charge a phone.3

Lvetek 5-outlet extender with 4 USB ports

Some of the results in our search for "USB outlet" were plug-in strips like this one, not in-wall outlets. The listing calls it an extender.8

How many watts does the USB-C port really give?

Leviton says its CC1P3-W gives up to 30 W on a single USB-C port with Power Delivery.1 Legrand's TR20USBPDW is also rated up to 30 W on one port. With both ports in use, Legrand says each works as 5V/3A/15W max.2 We found no Amazon listing for the Legrand, so it is not in the table. Leviton's CC1P3 page gives only the single-port figure.1

The cheaper outlets are different. TOPGREENER's listing claims 21 W in total at 5 V, and says the outlet does not support quick charging.3 TOPELER's listing gives 10 W per port when all ports are in use.4 ELEGRP's listing says 30 W combined across three ports. It does not say what the USB-C port gives alone, or whether it supports Power Delivery.5

Will it charge my iPhone, Pixel or laptop fast?

Apple says the iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max fast-charge with a 40 W adapter or higher. The iPhone Air and 17e use 20 W or higher, and an iPhone 15 or later uses Apple's 18 W or greater adapter.10 A 30 W port meets the 18 W and 20 W lines and is under the 40 W line. Google lists a 30 W charger for Pixel phones, and says other Power Delivery adapters rated 15 W or more also work.11

For laptops, Apple lists a 30 W adapter (13-inch only) among its options for the 2022 or later MacBook Air. The 14-inch MacBook Pro lists 67 W, 70 W or 96 W, and the 16-inch lists 140 W, so a 30 W outlet is under all of them. Apple says to use an adapter that meets the minimum wattage for the best charging.12

15 amp or 20 amp, and what do the safety listings mean?

Match the outlet to the one you have and the breaker behind it. Leviton makes the CC1P3-W in 15 A and the CC2P3-W in 20 A.1, 6 Legrand's TR20USBPDW is 20 A, and its page gives a body depth of 1.72 in.2

Leviton lists UL 1310 and UL 498 for both of its USB outlets.1, 6 For the cheaper outlets, the UL claims come only from the sellers' Amazon text, and one distributor marks the ELEGRP as not UL listed.3, 5 Read the label on the box before you buy.

When is a plug-in USB strip better?

Some of the results in a search for "USB outlet" are plug-in strips and extenders, not in-wall outlets.8 A strip moves with you and needs no one to open the wall. It does not give you the in-wall look, and it takes up the outlet it plugs into.

Questions people ask

Can a USB outlet charge a laptop?

Only one with Power Delivery. With one port in use, a 30 W port matches Apple's 30 W adapter for the 2022 or later 13-inch MacBook Air, and is under every MacBook Pro Apple lists.12

What does USB Power Delivery mean?

It is the standard that lets a charger and a device agree on more power. Apple says you can charge a Mac laptop with any USB-C adapter that supports it, and to use at least the minimum wattage for the best charging.12

Is the 30 W on the box per port?

Not always. ELEGRP says its 30 W is combined across three ports.5 TOPELER says 10 W per port when fully loaded.4 Leviton and Legrand give 30 W on a single port.1, 2

Which Leviton USB outlet should I buy?

Match your existing outlet. The CC1P3-W is 15 A and the CC2P3-W is 20 A. Both are rated up to 30 W on one USB-C port.1, 6

Turn off the breaker before you touch an outlet. Hire a licensed electrician if you are not sure how to swap one.
