A bulb that names Chamberlain and Genie

Pulems garage door opener bulb, “for Chamberlain and Genie” (pack size not listed)

The title says “for Chamberlain and Genie”, which only says what the bulb fits. Neither company lists it as theirs on the page we read, and the listing names no FCC or UL mark. The seller says it will not affect the range of your remotes, with no test named.6

Why do LED bulbs make my garage remote stop working?

Some LED bulbs give off radio noise. Genie says traditional LED bulbs can create significant interference between your remote and the opener.2 Chamberlain says to avoid low-quality LED bulbs, which can interfere with the operation of remote controls.4

Which bulb do Genie, LiftMaster and Chamberlain recommend?

Each names its own. Genie sells the GLEDB2, and says it works with all major brand openers.2 LiftMaster’s LMLED1 is designed to minimize radio interference.3 Chamberlain says that if you have trouble after adding another brand’s LED, switch to a CFL or its tested CHLED1 bulb.4

We found no current Amazon listing for the CHLED1, so we show the Genie and LiftMaster bulbs. Both are 800 lumens, which the makers rate as a 60 watt equivalent.1, 3

How big and how many watts can the bulb be?

Chamberlain says its openers are designed and tested for A19 incandescent bulbs, and the bulb should not exceed 2.375 inches wide or 4.43 inches long. It also says to check your manual for the size and wattage your opener allows.4

Chamberlain warns that using bulbs other than the ones it recommends may damage the opener.4 GE sells a 14 watt, 1,490 lumen garage door opener bulb, but its page says nothing about radio interference.8

Are the cheap “for garage door openers” LED bulbs safe to use?

Two third-party bulbs in our set both say they cut interference, and neither names a test. Torchstar names UL and FCC in its title and says it complies with FCC standards.5 The Pulems listing names no mark at all.6

Torchstar says it minimizes interference, but no opener maker names it. If your remote loses range after you install it, go back to the opener maker’s bulb.

What if my remote still has short range?

Swap the bulb first. Chamberlain’s advice is a CFL bulb or its tested CHLED1.4 After any swap, press the remote from the far end of your driveway to check the range.

Questions people ask

What LED bulb should I use in my garage door opener?

Use the opener maker’s bulb: the Genie GLEDB2 or the LiftMaster LMLED1, both 800 lumens.1, 3 Chamberlain names its CHLED1.4

Does a regular LED bulb hurt my garage remote?

It can. Genie and Chamberlain both say some LED bulbs interfere with the remote.2, 4

Can I use a brighter bulb in my opener?

Check your manual first. Chamberlain says to stay within your opener’s size and wattage, and other bulbs may damage it.4

Is the LiftMaster LMLED1 only for LiftMaster openers?

No. LiftMaster calls it a universal replacement bulb, and Genie says its own bulb works with all major brand openers.2, 3

Unplug the opener or turn off its breaker, let the old bulb cool, and use a stable ladder.
