A listing that sounds like a shop light and is not
ONLYLUX 8 ft LED replacement tubes, 45W (12-pack listing)
These are tubes for an old 8 ft fluorescent fixture, and the seller says to bypass or remove the starter and ballast first. There is no housing, cord or mount in the box.6
How many lumens does a garage with an 8-foot ceiling need?
A former utility lighting engineer, writing in Fine Woodworking, suggests about 50 foot-candles for a workshop.8 One foot-candle is one lumen on each square foot of floor, so a typical 20 by 20 foot two-car garage (400 square feet) needs about 20,000 lumens.9
Two BAX72 strips are rated for 20,000 lumens together.1 That is our arithmetic from rated lumens. Real output on the floor is lower, so round up.
Should I buy a 4 ft or an 8 ft light for an 8-foot ceiling?
Both work at this height. Hykolity says one of its 4 ft lights covers 10 by 10 feet when it hangs at 8 to 10 feet.5 Barrina’s BS84 4 ft strip hangs on a chain or mounts flat to the ceiling.4
An 8 ft strip puts the light in one long line, so you have fewer fixtures to hang and plug in. Barrina’s own pages disagree on how many you can link, so check the listing you buy.1
Plug-in or hardwired?
The BAX72 can be plugged in or hardwired. It accepts 100 to 277 volts.1 The BS84 and the hykolity both plug in with a 59 inch cord.4, 5 SHOPLED calls its light plug and play.2
Which brightness and temperature claims can I check?
Only Barrina and hykolity put numbers on a maker page. SHOPLED and ONLYLUX give 15,000 lumens as a seller claim, with no CRI.2, 3 SHOPLED also claims a -40 F to 140 F range, which we could not check against a maker page.2
If your garage gets cold, note that hykolity rates its light only down to 14 F.5
Questions people ask
Is an 8 ft shop light too long for an 8-foot ceiling?
No. The 8 ft is the length of the light, not the ceiling height. Hykolity gives 8 to 10 feet as the mounting height for its 4 ft light.5
Can I plug an 8 ft shop light into an outlet?
Yes. The BAX72 can be plugged in or hardwired, and SHOPLED sells its light as plug and play.1, 2
How many 8 ft strips can I link together?
Barrina’s BAX72 page says up to 4, and SHOPLED says no more than 3.1, 2
Are the ONLYLUX 8 foot LED lights shop lights?
One ONLYLUX listing is a full fixture. The 12-pack of 45W tubes is only the tubes, for an old fixture.3, 6
Turn off the breaker before you hardwire any light, set up a stable ladder, and hire a licensed electrician if you are not sure.
