Best under-cabinet lighting for renters

Buy the MCGOR 10-inch motion light bars: they mount with magnets and adhesive metal plates, charge by USB-C, and need no wiring.1 Every rechargeable pick here uses a stuck-on plate, pad or adhesive, and no listing gives a peel test, so try one on a hidden spot first.1–3

How each renter option mounts

The table puts the mount, power and sensor each maker states side by side, because a title like renter friendly does not tell you if you need screws.

Listings that look wireless or renter friendly but are not

WhitePoplar rechargeable motion ceiling light, 500 lumens

The title says renter friendly, but the listing says it comes with a bracket and mounting hardware, so it likely needs screws.5

Nicor 24-LED direct-wire light

The title says direct wire, which means a hardwired connection.6

Litever 6-piece kit, plug in or hardwired

The title says plug in or hardwired, and the listing shows no battery.7

Can I install under-cabinet lights without drilling?

Yes, with the bars here. MCGOR uses magnets plus adhesive metal plates.1 EZVALO's 13-inch closet light uses magnetic pads that peel and stick.2 EZVALO's 6-pack uses 3M adhesive or a magnet.3

Energizer's pucks mount with tape or screws, and the Amazon listing adds a magnet.4 Use the tape and skip the screws.

Will the adhesive plates damage my cabinets or paint?

No listing we read gives a peel test, including the EZVALO 6-pack, which uses 3M adhesive or a magnet.3

Stick one plate on a hidden spot, such as inside a cabinet door, and peel it off before you commit. The plate on your paint is the part that can leave a mark.

Do I need an outlet?

Not for the lights. The bars here run on a built-in battery and charge by USB-C.1–3 You plug the cable into a USB charger only to charge, then take it away.

Nicor says direct wire, so it needs wiring. Litever says plug in or hardwired, so it needs an outlet or wiring.6, 7

What happens at move-out?

If you used adhesive plates, the bars lift off their magnets and go with you, but the plates stay on the cabinet. Peel them off before you hand back the keys.

If you used screws, which the Energizer listing allows, you will have holes to fill.4

Questions people ask

Are there under-cabinet lights for renters that need no tools?

Yes. The MCGOR and EZVALO bars here mount with magnets, pads or adhesive plates, per their listings.1–3

Which renter friendly lights need screws?

WhitePoplar's title says renter friendly, but the listing says it comes with a bracket and mounting hardware.5 Energizer's pucks list tape or screws.4

Do renter friendly under-cabinet lights need wiring?

Not the battery bars. Nicor needs wiring, and Litever needs an outlet or wiring.6, 7

Do battery under-cabinet lights have a motion sensor?

The MCGOR and EZVALO bars do, with a range of 10 ft for MCGOR and up to 13 ft for EZVALO's closet light. Energizer's pucks do not; you push or tap them.1, 2, 4

If you ever switch to a hardwired light, turn off the breaker first, and hire a licensed electrician if you are unsure.
