Best smart switch for a ceiling fan with a light
Buy the Kasa Smart Fan Control and Dimmer KS240. Kasa says its two touch bars control the light and the fan in one panel, and it needs a neutral wire.1 The Lutron and Leviton smart fan controls we checked run the fan only, so a fan with a light needs a second control with them.2, 3

Three controls that do not fit
Lutron Caseta Fan Control PD-FSQN
Lutron says it controls the fan only, not the light, so it does not run a fan with a light.2
Leviton SureSlide Fan Control and Dimmer
It is not a smart switch, so it fails a question about smart switches.6
Kasa Smart Switch HS200
It is a light switch with no fan rating. Kasa sells the KS240 for fans.7
Can I use a light dimmer on a ceiling fan?
Use a control made for fans. A light dimmer is rated for lamps. Lutron's Diva LED+ sheet, for example, rates it for 150 W of dimmable LED and CFL, and it lists no fan motor load.9 We found no maker that says a light dimmer is safe on a fan motor.
Fan controls carry their own rating. Leviton rates the fan side of its 66DF-10W at 1.5 A, and the light side at 150 W of LED.6
One switch or two for a fan with a light?
One switch is possible. The Kasa KS240 puts a fan control and a dimmer in one panel.1 The Meross and Treatlife listings describe the same idea.4, 5
Lutron says its PD-FSQN will only control the fan, not the lighting load.2 Leviton says its D24SF is not for lighting loads or combined ceiling fan light kits.3 With those, the light needs its own control.
Do I need a neutral wire?
Yes, for the Kasa, Lutron and Treatlife controls: each says a neutral is required. The Meross text we read does not say either way, so check its listing.1, 5, 10
The Meross and Treatlife listings say the fan needs two separate load wires, one for the fan and one for the light.4, 5 Lutron says its fan control will not work if the old control uses a single wire for both.2 Check which kind you have before you buy.
Which fans will not work with a smart fan control?
Kasa says the KS240 is not for exhaust-type or DC-motor fans.1
Lutron says its fan control is not for fans with built-in fan speed or light control modules, DC motor fans, fans with remote controls, or bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans.10
Lutron's Maestro fan and light control is also not compatible with fans that have a control system built into the motor.11
What if I do not need a smart switch?
Leviton's 66DF-10W puts a fan slide and an LED dimmer in one box. Its page lists 1.5 A for the fan and 150 W of LED/CFL, and an adjustment for the lowest light level.6 It is not smart. Leviton's page does not say whether it needs a neutral.
