Four 3-way listings that fail or are unproven
Leviton Decora Smart Switch D315S
A 3-way switch that fails the no-neutral test. Leviton's page lists a neutral as required.3
Kasa Smart 3-Way Switch HS210
A cheap 3-way switch that needs a neutral. TP-Link's FAQ says that if neither of your two boxes has a neutral, you will be unable to use the HS210.2
Lutron Caseta 3-Way Smart Switch Kit (on/off)
Looks right because it says Caseta and 3-way, but the Amazon listing says the kit includes the PD-5ANS, which Lutron lists as needing a neutral.4
Youngzuth 3-way Zigbee Smart Light Switch
The listing says no neutral wire is required and that it works as a 3-way. We found no maker page to confirm it, and it needs a Zigbee hub.6
How does a 3-way smart switch work with no neutral?
The no-neutral kits keep one smart dimmer and turn the other switch spot into a wireless remote. Lutron's kit does this with a Pico remote.1 Leviton does it with a wire-free companion that pairs with its no-neutral dimmer.5
A kit that adds a second smart switch instead is a different design. Kasa and the Leviton D315S do that, and both need a neutral.2, 3
Do I need a hub for a no-neutral 3-way?
Lutron describes its Smart Hub as the control center for the Lutron app, scenes, schedules and voice assistants.8 The dimmer and Pico remote are the part that gives you 3-way dimming.1
Leviton needs a bridge. Its no-neutral dimmer requires the Decora Smart Wi-Fi Bridge, with or without a 3-way.5
Should I pick Lutron or Leviton?
Pick Lutron for most homes. Its dimmer is rated for 150 watts of LED, and the kit includes the Pico remote.1
Pick Leviton if you have a lot of LED bulbs on the circuit. Its dimmer is rated for 300 watts of LED, but your box must have a ground wire, and you must buy the bridge.5
How do I know if my box has a neutral?
TP-Link's FAQ explains how to find the neutral wire in a switch box.9 If you are not sure what you are looking at, stop and ask a licensed electrician before you buy.
