Best porch light bulb that does not attract bugs
Buy the Qualilux 1900K amber bulb. It claims 600 lumens, turns on at dusk, and is under the 2200K line a lighting maker gives for bug lights.1, 2 No bulb stops every bug. A forest test found color helped only with dimming, and none of these listings says it dims.3

Listings that look right but are not
Wiyifada amber LED bug light, 2000K, 2-pack
The title says 100W equivalent. The bullet says it replaces a 60W bulb. The listing gives no lumens and the bulb is 9 W.7
Gonhom dusk-to-dawn amber bug light, 10W
The listing says this 10W amber bulb replaces up to 100W and gives no lumens and no Kelvin number.8
GOOTOP bug zapper, 4200V
A bug zapper came up in our search for porch bug lights. It attracts bugs to an electric grid and is not a bulb for a porch fixture.9
What color porch light attracts the fewest bugs?
Yellow or amber. A University of Georgia Extension agent writes in a field report that soft, yellow lights are the least attractive to most insects, and that even an LED filtered to yellow or amber attracts fewer flying insects.11 LEDVANCE, a lighting maker, puts amber at 2,200K and under as best for bug lights, and calls daylight white (5,000K to 6,000K) a bulb that does not work as a bug light.2
Do yellow bug light bulbs work?
They help, but not with everything. A 2025 field test in Swiss forests (Conservation Biology) used test lamps, not porch bulbs. It found amber 2200K drew fewer moths and butterflies than warm white 2900K. It also drew about 46% more wasps, bees and ants than neutral white 3700K.3
The same paper found light color mattered only when it was combined with dimming.3 None of the bulbs here says it can be dimmed. LEDVANCE says it plainly: a bug light won't solve every problem.2
What Kelvin is a bug light?
LEDVANCE lists amber at 2,200K and under as best for bug lights, and warm white at 2,700K to 3,500K as attracting fewer insects.2 The Qualilux claims 1900K. DEWENWILS, LOHAS and Wiyifada claim 2000K.1, 4, 6, 7 Feit and Gonhom say yellow or amber and give no Kelvin number.5, 8
Does brightness matter?
The Swiss forest test says it can. Color changed how many insects came only when the light was dimmed too.3 None of these listings says the bulb dims, so the plain step is to pick a lower-lumen bulb, or one whose maker says it works with a dimmer. Among these bulbs, the Qualilux and DEWENWILS claim 600 lumens, LOHAS claims 720 and Feit claims 800.1, 4–6 A brighter yellow bulb is still a bright bulb.
Is a bug zapper the same as a bug light?
No. A zapper is an electric plug-in unit that attracts bugs to a grid.9 It came up in our search for porch bug lights, but it is not a bulb for your fixture, and it does not make a porch light less buggy.
Questions people ask
What is the best porch light bulb for bugs?
The Qualilux 1900K amber bulb. It claims 600 lumens, a standard E26 base, 25,000 hours and a 3-year warranty, and it turns on and off by itself.1
Do LED bug lights really keep bugs away?
They draw fewer of some insects, not all. A University of Georgia Extension agent writes that yellow or amber filtered LEDs attract fewer flying insects.11 The Swiss forest field test found fewer moths and butterflies at 2200K than at 2900K, but more wasps, bees and ants than at 3700K.3
Is a yellow bulb the same as a bug light?
Not always. The Feit yellow bulb gives no Kelvin number on its listing, and it claims 800 lumens.5 A bulb with a low Kelvin and low brightness is the closest match to what the studies describe.
Which bug bulbs turn on and off by themselves?
The Qualilux and DEWENWILS both have a built-in dusk-to-dawn sensor.1, 4
