Best GFCI outlet for a refrigerator

Buy the Leviton GFTR1-W: a 15 A GFCI that tests itself, and Leviton says it resists the noise that trips GFCIs on modern fridges.1, 2 Of the makers we read, only Leviton and Legrand claim this on their own pages, and neither shows test data.3 An unopened fridge keeps food cold about 4 hours, so add a power-loss alarm.4

Two listings that do not solve this

BLUESKY 20 A GFCI, self-test, tamper and weather resistant

The listing promises fewer false trips. It shows no test or standard, and we found no maker page to back the claim.10

Fosmon Refrigerator surge protector, 3 outlets

This surge protector shows up in refrigerator GFCI searches. It guards against power spikes, not ground faults, so it does not stop a GFCI from tripping.11

Why does a GFCI keep tripping on a refrigerator?

Leviton says modern appliances can run at higher frequencies, and a GFCI may read that as a dangerous fault. It names high-efficiency refrigerators with inverter motors as an example.2

Siemens gives a plainer list in a guide to its breakers. It says the main sources of nuisance tripping are wiring issues and incompatibility with electronic devices, and it names damaged wires, loose connections and incorrectly wired circuits.14 If a GFCI trips again and again, a new outlet may not fix it. Ask a licensed electrician to check the circuit.

Does the high-frequency rating matter?

Leviton says UL created an optional high-frequency rating, and that all of Leviton's residential GFCI receptacles are HF-rated.15 That is Leviton's own claim, not independent testing. Leviton's pages do not say, model by model, that the UL rating is on each one, so read the box.

Legrand makes one outlet aimed at the same problem. Legrand says its 20 A radiant Sensitive Appliance GFCI, model 2097TRAPLW, "limits tripping caused from variable-speed drives."3 We found no Amazon listing for it, so it is not in the table. We found no test data from any maker showing that one brand trips less on a fridge.

15 amp or 20 amp, and which features count?

Match the new outlet to the one you have and the breaker behind it. Leviton makes this slim GFCI in 15 A and 20 A.5, 6 If you are not sure which you have, an electrician can tell you.

Self-test is not a reason to pick one brand. UL required GFCIs made from June 29, 2015 to test themselves.16 On self-test, the main difference is how often each brand says it checks: ELEGRP's listing says every 5 seconds,8 and Legrand says every 3 seconds.3 Leviton says its outlet checks itself at power-up and then automatically, and does not publish how often.5 A status light shows a trip, but only if you look at it.

How long does food last if the power goes out?

FDA says an unopened refrigerator keeps food cold for about 4 hours. A full freezer holds its temperature for about 48 hours, or 24 hours if it is half full.4 FDA also says to keep appliance thermometers in the fridge and the freezer.4

To the fridge, a tripped GFCI is the same as a power cut. If you only look at the outlet once a day, the 4 hours may be gone before you know.

Does a power-loss alarm help?

It can, if you hear or see it in time. These claims come from Amazon listings, and we have not run the alarms ourselves.

Seektain's listing describes a plug-in alarm that sounds a siren and sends a phone alert.7 A phone alert needs Wi-Fi, so check your signal near the fridge before you buy.

Satisure's listing describes a 120 dB siren with a flashing light and no phone alert.12 A siren only helps if someone is in earshot, so it suits a fridge near living space.

Questions people ask

Do I need a GFCI on a refrigerator?

Codes vary by place and by when the home was wired. Ask a licensed electrician or your local building inspector.

Will a surge protector stop a GFCI from tripping?

No. A surge protector guards against power spikes, and a GFCI trips on ground faults.11 Fosmon's refrigerator surge protector is a different product from a GFCI.

How long will food stay cold if the outlet trips?

FDA says about 4 hours for an unopened fridge. A full freezer keeps its temperature about 48 hours.4

Is a 20 A GFCI from ELEGRP or BLUESKY as good?

Their listings do not say. ELEGRP's makes no nuisance-trip claim,8 and BLUESKY's promises fewer false trips with no test shown.10 Only Leviton and Legrand put the claim on their own pages, and that is their word, not test data.3, 15

Can wiring cause the tripping?

Yes. In a guide to its breakers, Siemens lists damaged wires, loose connections and incorrectly wired circuits among the main causes.14 An electrician can tell which one you have.

Turn off the breaker before you touch an outlet. Codes vary on where a GFCI is needed, so ask a licensed electrician or your local inspector, and hire one if you are not sure.
