Best dimmer switch for LED lights

Buy the Lutron Diva LED+ DVCL-153P. Lutron rates it for 150 watts of dimmable LED, it needs no neutral wire, and it has a low-end adjustment to stop flicker.1 The Lutron and Leviton dimmers we checked share that 150-watt rating, so the flicker fix is what sets them apart.1–3

A dimmer that claims more than it shows

Amazon Basics Rocker Dimmer

The listing says no neutral is needed, but there is no maker sheet to check its LED rating.5

ELEGRP Digital Dimmer (6-pack)

The listing claims a 300 W rating and that it works with 99% of dimmable LED bulbs, but we found no maker sheet or tested-bulb list.6

What makes a dimmer work with LED bulbs?

The dimmer and the bulb both have to be right. First, the dimmer must be rated for LED. Lutron says its plain Diva DV-103P is not rated for LED, and it points to the Diva LED+ DVCL-153P instead.8

Second, the bulb must say dimmable. Lutron says that when dimming LEDs or CFLs, only bulbs marked or rated as dimmable may be used.9

Why do my LED lights flicker on a dimmer?

Check the bulb first. If it is not marked dimmable, swap it before you change anything else.9

Next, raise the low end. The Diva LED+ has a low-end adjustment made to suit a wide range of bulbs.1 Leviton says that if lights flicker at low levels, you should try raising the minimum dim level first.3

Then count the bulbs. Lutron says some dimmable LEDs need a minimum number of bulbs to work properly, so one small bulb on a dimmer can act up.1

Last, look for a second LED+ dimmer on the same lighting circuit. Lutron says only one Maestro LED+ dimmer can be installed in a lighting circuit. That is about Maestro, so check your own dimmer's sheet.10

What does the 150 W LED rating mean?

It is the most LED wattage the dimmer is rated to run.1 Add up the watts printed on your bulbs. If the total is under 150, you are inside the rating. We count the watts printed on the bulb, not the 'equal to' watts on the box.

Do I need a neutral wire for an LED dimmer?

The Diva, Toggler, SureSlide and Caseta dimmers here all list no neutral as needed.1–4

If your box does have a neutral, Lutron says it recommends neutral-based dimmers for LED loads, because LEDs react to nearly any voltage.11

Should I buy a smart dimmer instead?

Only if you want app, schedule or voice control. The Caseta PD-6WCL has the same 150 W LED rating.4 Lutron says its hub is what adds the app, scenes, schedules and voice control.12

Questions people ask

Do I need a special dimmer for LED lights?

Yes. The dimmer must be rated for LED. Lutron says its plain Diva DV-103P is not, and it offers the Diva LED+ DVCL-153P.8

Can I use any dimmable LED bulb with the Diva LED+?

Not always. Lutron says some dimmable LEDs and CFLs need a minimum number of bulbs for proper operation.1

What is low-end trim?

It sets the lowest brightness the dimmer will go to. Raising it keeps the bulb above the level where it flickers. Leviton calls it the minimum dim level.1, 3

Is a dimmer that claims to work with 99% of bulbs a good buy?

Be careful. That dimmer's listing makes the claim, but we found no maker sheet or bulb list behind it.6

Turn off power at the breaker before you touch any switch. If you are not sure, hire a licensed electrician.
